125 Years ago, the United States Mint issued a new 5 cent coin. Known as the “V’ nickel, it showed the head of Liberty on the obverse and a Roman “V” (meaning 5) on reverse.
However, this new “V” Nickel did not have the word “cents” anywhere on it. These “V” Nickels were quickly gold plated and passed off as $5 Dollar Gold Coins for profit, giving these coin a new name... the Racketeer Nickel.
The United States Mint got wind of this, quickly learned its lesson, and put the word “cents” at the bottom on the reverse of the coin within less than a year.
Very few of these Racketeer Nickels survived, which is why they are so interesting to collectors today. Select “V” Nickels can go for as much as $250.00 to $300.00 or more.
However, we have been able to obtain and gold plate a limited number of rare and historic Racketeer Nickels. Along with your 1883 “V” Nickel professionally goldplated by the Gallery, your Racketeer Nickel Set includes the last four years of “V” nickels ever officially minted.
Sent in a crafted wooden display, your Racketeer Nickel Set is truly a treasure that can be passed down through the generations.
